The Fort Henry Heights Skating Club (FHHSC)"The Fort Henry Heights Skating Club (FHHSC) has been in operation for 38 Years.  We are located at the Constantine Arena and provide skating instruction for all levels. We are a member of Skate Canada and offer Canskate (learn to skate) and STARSkate programs, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The aim of the Club is to promote and develop an interest in the sport of skating. The emphasis is on community participation and providing an enjoyable experience for the skaters.

Programs.

The Canskate Program is a seven stage program that starts with the basic "learn to skate" skills and progresses in difficulty and skill level throughout the seven stages. This is a simple streamlined program teaching basic movement such as pushing, gliding, stopping, turning, spinning and jumping.  Lessons consist of 40 minutes of instruction, twice per week, and are taught by Professional Coaches and qualified Program Assistants.  Awards and incentives are used to motivate skaters to achieve and develop their skills as well as to keep their interest.  The minimum age for Canskate is 4 as of 31 December 2004.

The STARSkate (formerly known as TestStream) stands for:   Skills, Tests, Achievemnet, Recognition Program.  This program offers opportunities for skaters to develop basic to advanced skating skills in three different areas:  Dance, Free Skating, and Skating skills.  There skills are then grouped into primary, intermediate and senior level tests.

Preliminary STARSkate is designed to help the skater's transition from CanSkate to STARSkate.  This program offers group lessons on advanced CanSkate and introduces the skater to the preliminary level skating skills in stroking, freestyle, dance and skills.

Junior, Intermediate and Senior STARSkate are figure skating programs for the more serious skater.   These programs are taught via private lessons.   All skaters registering for these programs must have a professional coach to augment the progress of the skater and to prepare them for the various testing levels.   Group lessons for stroking are provided by the club and included in your session fee.   Private coaching costs are not included in the session fees.

Coaching

Our club operates with both Professional Coaches and volunteer Program Assistants (PAs). PAs are volunteer skaters from our intermediate and Senior Programs.  All of our coaching staff are trained in the most up to date techniques and skills they require to teach your child.

Newsletter

A club newsletter will be made available each month to keep you up to date on upcoming events, or ice changes if required.  A calendar of actual skating sessions is also provided at the beginning of the year.  All information is also available on this web site.

Lessons Schedule.

Due to the limited availability of ice, our lesson schedule is very tight. We make all attempts to ensure lessons proceed in a timely fashion, therefore, we ask your co-operation in having your child ready to be on the ice when their lesson commences.

Volunteers.

As with any "volunteer run" organization, we are actively seeking volunteers to take part and assist in the daily running of our club. Whether you assist with our ice show, as a phone contact parent or on the executive, your assistance is extremely valued and necessary.

Helmets & Clothing.

Comfortable, warm clothing including mitts or gloves is a must. Helmets are mandatory for skaters from Beginner to Stage 3.   Safety helmets are recommended and should fit well and should adequately cover both the forehead and the back of the head. We do not recommend bicycle helmets.

FHHSC Warm Up Suits.

Club jackets and warm-up suits are available and ordered once a year, normally in November.

Harness Usage.

Use of the harness will only take place on the 2nd Sunday of each month.   Usage is restricted to FHHSC skaters , with priority being given to home club members.  Guest skaters will not be permitted use of the harness.

Guest Skating.

Guest skating is only permitted on the STARSkate sessions with prior consent of the FHHSC.  Guest skaters must sign in and pay, at the sound booth, prior to skating.
