What is H’art Prep?
H’art Prep is a ten-month program for people with intellectual disabilities, 21 years of age and older, who want to learn more about goal setting while pursuing continuing education and post-secondary education experiences, and meaningful volunteer opportunities. Students will explore these topics while enhancing basic literacy, study and social skills in our creative setting.
At the end of the program, students will have a skills portfolio. The portfolio is a tool students can use, and add to, to express their interests and goals. The portfolio will contain among other items:
- Learning goals
- Personal interests
- Achievements
- Record of experience and accomplishments
- Evaluations
- Effective adaptations and learning strategies
Why Should I Attend H'art Prep?
You should attend H’art Prep to:
- Learn about your own strengths and weaknesses;
- Discover your interests and options;
- Experience goal setting, problem solving and decision making, through instruction and real-life experiences;
- Develop ways and strategies to modify and regulate your own behaviour;
- Build a personal portfolio of your own interests, accomplishments and experiences;
- Increase your involvement in life-long learning;
- Work on your relationships with your co-workers, peers and supervisors;
- Participate in individual and group projects.
At H’art Prep, you will think about your interests and skills and how you might achieve more of the things you want in your life. You will begin to find people and organizations that can help you achieve your goals.

What are the eligibility criteria?
- Be 21 or older when program starts
- Have the ability to function in the school setting without disruptive behaviours
- Have medium needs
- Have a circle of support i.e. parents, caregivers, community
- Be willing to volunteer
- Have the ability to arrive on time
- Be able to self-feed/toilet/medicate
- Have the ability to benefit from exploring the experience and your interests
- Have education and career aspirations
- Have the ability to arrange your own transportation to and from H’art Prep
What are the 2008-2009 program dates?
The program will start again in September 2008. We may ask you to come in earlier to get to know the program during the summer experience program.
When is the application deadline for the next session?
The deadline is August 15, 2008.
Are there any costs to participate in the program?
There are fees associated with attending H'art Prep. Students will also be responsible for any additional costs for field trips, etc. You may qualify for financial aid through government support. Please contact us to learn more.
How many days a week will I attend H'art Prep?
H’art Prep students commit to attending the program three days a week for the duration of the ten month program.
Will I have “homework” at H’art Prep?
Some homework and assignments that are project based and require independent work and research.
How will I be evaluated?
You will be encouraged to assess your own progress and express your own goals and dreams. Success is based on self-discovery, exploring new options and reaching achievable goals. H’art Prep is not a “pass/fail” environment. At the end of the program, you wil have a “skills portfolio” that includes a statement of personal interests, major achievements, selected written material and artwork, self-evaluations and recommendations for effective learning strategies.
