Volunteers are key

Operation Red Nose is only possible due to the strong commitment of numerous volunteers who fill all sorts of roles. The majority of volunteers are needed to serve as part of three-person teams – a escort driver, designated driver and navigator – who escort clients safely to their destination. You can assemble your own three-person team or be teamed up with other volunteers. All volunteers must be willing to submit to a police background check prior to volunteering.

Escort Driver

Must be at least 19 years old and be licensed and insured to drive a vehicle in Ontario. This volunteer uses his/her own vehicle to escort the volunteer driver and navigator to the pick-up location. He/she then follows the designated driver, navigator and client(s) to the requested destination. He/she and the designated driver and navigator return to headquarters or to another pick-up location.

Designated driver
Must be at least 21 years old and be licensed and insured to drive a vehicle in Ontario. This volunteer drives the client’s vehicle to the requested destination.

Navigator
Must be at least 19 years old. This volunteer rides along with the designated driver and the client(s). He/she assists the designated driver with directions and keeps in contact with headquarters. He/she also acts as the team secretary by filling out the client’s receipt.

How to become a volunteer

Fill out a volunteer application form available at La Route du Savoir/Operation Red Nose Headquarters, 711 Dalton Ave., Kingston Police Headquarters, 705 Division st., OPP Headquarters in Hartington, all three City of Kingston offices (City Hall, 216 Ontario St., 211 Counter St., and Midland Avenue), the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre on Highway 2, the Canadian Automobile Association, 2300 Princess St., and all Royal Canadian Legions. Be sure to sign the application form and return it by fax to 544-0431, mail it to Operation Red Nose, 711 Dalton Ave., Rm. 187, Kingston, K7M 8N6 or drop it off at Operation Red Nose Headquarters. Return forms at least 48 hours prior to your first night of volunteering.

Team nights

It’s a lot of fun to volunteer with Operation Red Nose but it’s even more fun to do so as a team. Organize a team night at your work or through your community group. We will advertise the night in our promotions. If you want to reserve an evening, call Operation Red Nose at 544-7447. We’ll require the name of your team spokesperson, their telephone number, the date you wish to volunteer and the number of participating volunteers. We require a minimum of 15 volunteers to designate a team night. Once you have registered, we will send you copies of the volunteer application form. These must be filled out, signed and returned to Operation Red Nose Headquarters at 711 Dalton Ave. at least one week prior to your team night.
