- Lent
-
The first Sunday of Lent is February 18th - coming up soon! Our worship theme for this six week season is Wandering Hearts: Figuring out Faith with Peter. We will be reflecting on the stories about Jesus' disciple, Peter, as a way to gain insight for our own faith journey.
There is a wonderful little devotional booklet to go with this worship series, but printing them (particularly colour copies) is not without cost. We do not want to print more than will be used, so please order your Lent devotional booklet if you would like to have one. A colour copy costs $22 (the cost of printing it at Staples), but there is no charge for a black and white copy. Please use the sign-up sheet on the table in the church hall to order your devotional (or you can send an email ). If you order a colour copy we will be in touch to collect your $22.

- Coldest Night of the Year Fundraiser
-
Our church has a 10-person team walking in this year's Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser, which raises money for Lionhearts, Kingston. Lionhearts Inc. does a lot of great work among vulnerable populations here in Kingston! For example:
- Every week they prepare and deliver 3,000 meals for distribution at food banks, shelters, and community-based programs
- Lionhearts shelters and houses 500 individuals a week at multiple sites across Kingston in warming centres, shelters and transitional housing
- Twice a month Lionhearts packs and delivers boxes of nutritious food for students (and their families) who are experiencing food insecurity
- They also retrain individuals experiencing challenges such as addiction, homelessness, or other barriers, and provide meaningful employment in skills like culinary, property management, and laundry services.
They are caring for our neighbours in need and so we are eager to support their work!
If you are not walking, we hope you will consider supporting our team with a donation. You can do this in one of two ways:
- You can make a donation to our team online here. Click the gold button in the upper-right corner of the page where it says, donate to team.
- Make a cash donation on Sunday mornings. For donations over $20, please put your cash donation in an envelope with your name and address on it. We'll make sure you get a tax receipt.

- GUC Helpers
-
GUC Helpers provide meals for households belonging to our church who may need extra help for a few days or a week. This is not a new ministry, but what is new is that we would like to compile a list of people willing to provide such help to members of our church family who are sick or grieving or recovering from surgery. Each helper would cook and deliver a meal. This group also needs a co-ordinator. If you are interested in being part of GUC Helpers, please email Rev. Elizabeth Boehm-Wilson or add your name to the sign-up sheet in the church hall.
-
- Congregational Classifieds
-
We are starting something else new. If you have a classified ad (help wanted, services offered, looking for employment, item wanted, item for sale, etc.) you can now advertise in the church chat and on the congregational bulletin board. If you want to post an item in the Congregational Classifieds send it to Rev. Elizabeth Boehm-Wilson by email or bring her a written copy. Rev. Boehm-Wilson will see that it is put it in the church chat and on the bulletin board.

- Coffee Time Volunteers Needed
-
Coffee Time after church can resume if we have volunteers to do the work. We need people to:
- Set up tables & chairs
- Put on the coffee & tea
- Bring snacks (two volunteers)
- Do dishes (two volunteers)
- Put away tables & chairs (two volunteers).
-
- Membership at GUC
-
Perhaps you are new to our church family; or perhaps you have been among us for a long while but never made it official. Either way, we are delighted to have you worshipping with us. If you are interested in becoming a member, "New Members Classes" will be offered soon. This is an opportunity to learn a little more about our faith and our church. If you are interested, please speak to Rev. Elizabeth Boehm-Wilson.

- Messy Church
-
Messy Church is a work in progress. Messy Church is rather like a brand--there are standards we have to uphold in order to use the name. There are Messy Church gatherings happening at churches of various denominations all over the world. Messy Church gatherings are meant to be a fun time of fellowship & worship; they are meant to build Christ-centred community amongst people of all ages.
Everyone is welcome at Messy Church! You don't have to have children to come. It's a great chance to have conversations with some of your church family, to get to know the children a bit better, and eat a good meal prepared by a member of the congregation. Messy Church begins at 5:00 p.m. Dinner is served around 5:45 - 6:00 after which we have a brief and lively worship service with fun music. We end the evening with dessert! We gang-up on the clean-up and we're out by 7:15.
Messy Church is an outreach program of this congregation. We hope that it gives busy young families an opportunity to worship with their children, and to find a warm and welcoming Christian community. Our church is offering a Messy Church Gathering on the third Friday of the month in October, November, February, March, April, May and June. For each one of these we plan and prepare a meal, a short worship service and a few crafts or activities for children.
Messy Church would like to grow their team of volunteers. Please consider if you would be willing to:
- Organize a CRAFT or ACTIVITY for children that goes with the monthly theme
- Prepare a healthy SNACK or a DESSERT that goes with the theme
- Plan & lead the WORSHIP portion of the evening that goes with the theme
-
- Craft Sale
-
Oh, Ye Crafty Crafters, have you remembered that we will have a church table at the Craft and Bake Sale in November? Your donations of your time and skills in making items for our table will see the proceeds go to support our church. Thanks!
-
- Scent Free
-
In consideration to some members of our congregation, please refrain from wearing scented products to church.
-
- Greeters Needed
-
In the past we have had a volunteer who recruited and organized greeters for every Sunday. Greeters come early, welcome everyone, hand out bulletins and take up the offering. At present we do not have a volunteer to do this job. Can you volunteer to serve as a greeter some Sunday that works for you? There is a sign-up sheet by the coffee pot in the hall on Sunday mornings. Thank you.
-
- Car Pooling
-
If you are interested in getting or giving a ride to church on Sunday mornings, please leave your name and number at the office.
-
- Good Newsletter Delivery
-
Would you like to receive your church newsletter by email rather than have be delivered a paper copy? We could save a little on printing costs by doing this. Some of you have already signed up for it, but if you haven't and would like to, there is a sign-up sheet in the church hall.
-
- Leading Prayers
-
Would you be willing to take an occasional turn leading the Prayer of the People in our worship service — lifting up the thanksgivings and concerns of this congregation before God and on behalf of all of us? Please let Rev. Elizabeth Boehm-Wilson know if you are willing. Thank you.
-
- Church Email List
-
Do you have an email address? Would you like to receive occasional updates from the church regarding upcoming events or news? To get on this mailing list, simply email Rev. Elizabeth Boehm-Wilson with your email address.
-
- Book Sharing
-
Many people have expressed an interest in sharing books they have read, and many have read books that have been used as references in sermons. These books are already being shared within the congregation. Rev. Elizabeth Boehm-Wilson has placed a small shelf for books beside the memorial case in the hall, and people have begun putting books for sharing on that shelf. Please borrow a book, enjoy it, then return it to the shelf for others to borrow.
-
- GUC Workings
-
If you would like to know how the committee structure functions at Glenburnie United Church, please consult the Governance Guide. A hardcopy is available in the church office. If you would like to know what the current issues are, minutes from the meetings of both Session and Stewards can be found in the office, too. If you have a question or are looking for other information, please ask someone from the Official Board and they will be happy to get the information for you or refer you to the right person to answer your question.
-
- Time and Talents
-
Do you have time and talents that you are ready to share, but no one has contacted you? If you could help (baking from home, setting up tables, etc.) with any of the events convened by the UCW, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board or contact a UCW member. We greatly appreciate the generous support we have received and continue to receive from the congregation.
-
- Food Bank Sunday
-
We have designated the fourth Sunday of each month as Food Bank Sunday. On that Sunday, please bring non-perishable food and we will get your donations to the South Frontenac Community Food Bank. Please put your donations in our food-bank wagon in the narthex, right outside the sanctuary doors.
The items needed most are canned tomatoes, tuna & canned meats, chunky soups, peanut butter, canned vegetables & baked beans, pasta sauce & pasta, canned fruits, cereal & crackers.
Thank you to the couple in our congregation who donated the shiny green wagon for us to use for food bank collections!
-
- Bulletin Board
-
Please check the bulletin boards for new posters advertising upcoming events. One board is outside the kitchen; the other is across from the office.
-
- Scripture Readers
-
Would you like to read scripture on Sunday morning? If so, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board across from the office. Please add your name to the list and include your phone number or email address.
-
- Offering Envelopes
-
Offering envelopes are available. If you don't already have them, please ask! Using the envelopes helps our weekly Offering counters and our bookkeeper. It also ensures your Offering is accurately tracked for tax receipt purposes.
-
- This Church's Ministry Depends on You and Me
-
The ministry of this church (worship, pastoral care, outreach projects, benevolence, our support of the UCC Mission & Service, and the hospitality offered by our building) is made possible with your financial support. We are grateful to you for the many ways you share your gifts of time, talent and treasure. Together we serve as the body of Christ in our community.
Donations can be made in the following ways:
- Cheques can be mailed to Glenburnie United Church, 1028 Unity Road, Glenburnie, ON, K0H 1S0.
- Giving via PAR is extremely beneficial to the church as it is predictable and steady.
- You can also make your offering by e-transfer using the church office email address: guc@bellnet.ca
